Dirk Hooper

When I was 6 years old, I was drawing Luke Skywalker and Spider-Man and creating a shared universe where I told their stories. My creative endeavors, even at the beginning, involved both words and art.

Naturally, words and art led me to draw comics in my teens and 20s, and I was fortunate to self-publish some comics with friends, at a time when self-publishing was much harder and more costly than it is today. The work I created during that time is still something I treasure today, and the friendships I forged during that phase are still strong.

Over the past ten years I’ve done a lot of creative things, including professional glamour photography, podcasting, audiobook narration, cinematography, screenwriting, marketing, branding, and consulting. And I wrote two successful erotica novels under a pen name.

I love writing spicy stuff, but I wanted to write for a wider audience. And I have SO MANY stories to tell. I have enough stories running around my head to write for another 1000 years! The time is right to go for it.

Coming Soon…

My next three books are going to be in the dark romance genre. I found that genre because my two previous books, even though they were ultra-hot, were absolutely romance novels and I love writing love stories.

As I stretched my wings, I found a great author community that welcomed me to join their shared worlds, which led to future books “Love, Whiskey, & the Eternal War” and “Zero Point Sexploit.” But it was this Substack that led to the book I’m working on now, “The Rider Who Fell from Heaven.”

“The Rider Who Fell from Heaven” is a dark romance horror western with a streak of vigilante justice. It’s “High Plains Drifter” meets “City of Angels.”

Sera, a battle-worn drifter haunted by his past, rides into town carrying little more than his guilt. Eliza, a fiery widow, sees beyond his scars and silence. As a curse grips the town and darkness rises from below, Sera faces a choice… keep riding or stay and fight for a redemption he believes he no longer deserves.

My Writing Bones

Who am I, as a writer? To be honest, I’ll leave that assessment up to you, because you’re the final judge on what kind of writer I am. But I can tell you what I hope to be.

Multiple Genres

Remember back when I was 6 years old and I put Spider-Man and Luke Skywalker in the same universe? I never got over that. (And if you saw “Infinity War,” Marvel finally caught up with me!) I like to mix up genres and build strange worlds and put characters in wild situations.

“The Rider Who Fell from Heaven” is a dark romance horror western with some vigilant justice thrown in for good measure. “Love, Whiskey & The Eternal War” is a dark romance with an all-female motorcycle club, vampires, demons, and angels. “Zero Point Sexploit” is a dark romance spy thriller with action and cyberpunk elements.

And all my other stories are like this. It’s just where I live, and I want you to visit there with me.

Character Arcs and Aspirational Characters

I want my characters to have depth, and I want you to see them grow through the story. Ideally, I want you to fall in love with the characters, flaws and all. Hopefully you’ll love them as much as I do while I’m writing them.

But I also want my main characters to be working toward creating a better world. Some will succeed at that, and some will fail, but it won’t be because they didn’t try. My characters want to make their little corner of the universe a better place to live.

If you want to read “Game of Thrones” stories where the world starts out as shitty and once the story is over, nothing really improves, that’s perfectly fine, but it’s not the stories I want to weave.

Happy Ever After

As a dark romance author (and as someone who writes erotica) I want to give you a fulfilling ending. Did you watch the Taylor Sheridan series “1923?” If you didn’t like the way that ended, then you and I see eye-to-eye. Let me be clear, I love Taylor Sheridan stories, but he missed the mark there.

The really real world we live in is full of enough loss. I don’t enjoy adding to the bad news that you see on cable news, or the bad news that comes in your mailbox, or the bad news that comes in the middle of night when you least expect it. If you make it to the end of my novel then there’s some good news waiting for you.

I’m sorry if that ruins the story for some people. There are plenty of authors who will be glad to ruin your day, if you enjoy that. But not me.

Sex and Violence

I write erotica and I enjoy it. While I’m not going to share too much personal stuff here, I’ll say that I’ve also lived an interesting life and probably experienced some things that most people assume only happens in movies. My stories and my characters are sexy. I won’t apologize for that. Sex is a healthy, natural, and foundational part of life, and I share sex in my books.

Gritty action and brutal violence are something I’ve always enjoyed in books, movies and comics. In my novels, I like to make you feel the heat as things get wild. I want to tell stories with real stakes, that make your heart beat, and your nerves cringe.

Sex and violence are primary reasons my books are “dark” romance.

Artisanal Books

When I write my books I try to put as much as I can into the story. If I can work in some history, or neat little pieces of research, I do that. Often, I’ll create maps, sometimes because I need to keep up where things are, and sometimes because I just think it’s cool. Themes and symbolism are often part of my tales. If you like to dig a little deeper, there may be more for you to discover.

Remember when I was a kid? How I told stories in words and pictures? I still do that. I’m also an artist, so I draw illustrations of my characters, do little pieces for the chapter headings, and will usually do the cover myself. I’m one of the few writers out there who is also a professional artist, who has work in the permanent collection of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, The Leather Archives in Chicago, Illinois, and the Patpong Museum in Thailand. I’ve been published in magazines, albums, and comics for three decades and shown my work in shows and galleries around the world. I bring that experience and skillset to my books.

And what I add to my books doesn’t end there. I do my best to make a unique experience for you. I’m not a book-writing factory. Each book I put out is something special and I take extra time to get it right.

Fiercely Aggressively Independent

I don’t answer to anyone.

There are no publishers who guide what I do. No agents correct my work. No company oversees what I write. I’m an island.

That doesn’t mean that I don’t take the advice of other writers, friends, editors or readers. I certainly do! I seek advice on what I’m writing, and I’ve changed things many times based on their input. The only opinion that truly matters comes from readers.

But, being an independent writer allows me to do things my own way. What you see on the page is bereft of compromises, writing to conventions, writing to market, or anything else I don’t intend.

The result is sometimes weird, often self-indulgent, maybe challenging… but always uniquely my own.

Connection

The final pillar of what makes me the writer I am, is that I want to build a connection with you and build a broader community.

I want to hear what you think. I need your comments, notes, critique, and questions. I’m sharing to hopefully get your input.

But I’m also available to you in other ways. I’ve always been a proponent of replying to comments and DMs. When possible, I make public appearances. You can find me on my own weekly podcast and as a guest on other shows. I’m always happy to hear what you have to say and answer your questions.

Dirk Hooper – Author

Now you know what stories I tell. They are multiple genres, have complex character development, feature upbeat aspirational endings, have sex and violence, and are crafted with as much care as possible.

Finally, I deeply value every reader and I want that connection. If you have a question or comment, I want to hear from you!
